We are often asked about telephone lines and lifts so we have produced a Lift Owner News article on this subject which can be found by clicking here.
Where a lift or enclosed lifting platform does not have a modern alarm communication system fitted, then we recommend one is fitted as an improvement in passenger safety. The relevant standard for alarm systems for lifts is BS EN 81-28.
Where a lift has been fitted with an alarm communication system then it is important that this is not disabled and that the owner/ person responsible ensures that the communications link e.g. telephone line is kept working.
If the alarm communication system is not connected or is not working, then it is for the lift owner to consider whether the lift can be left in service perhaps being monitored until the system is workling again.
