Lifts, escalators and moving walks, lifting platforms, stairlifts and other lifting appliances are complex products and are likely to be important for the users of a building. Clients are therefore likely to want to make checks on potential providers of products and services. As part of this, clients considering LEIA member companies can have confidence that membership of LEIA means that the companies already meet the following important criteria.
- To join, companies must have audited accounts for at least three years and meet the criteria for membership of the Association.
- The design and installation of lifts and escalators is highly regulated, there are wide ranging and complex statutory requirements. LEIA members have access to the best and most up to date information on safety, standards and legislative matters – supported by professional assistance.
- LEIA provides for its members through comprehensive programmes for both skills training (NVQ) and academic study up to a master’s degree in lift engineering.
- LEIA membership requires that member companies have certification from an awarding body is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for:

- > quality management systems to BS ISO 9001
- > occupational health and safety management systems to BS ISO 45001 or BS OHSAS 18001
LEIA membership can be summarised as companies who:‐
- Are well established, trading for a minimum of 3 years
- Have certification to BS ISO 9001 for quality management systems audited regularly
- Have approved company safety policies to BS ISO 45001 or BS OHSAS 18001 audited regularly
- Carry appropriate product and third party insurance
- Employ skilled staff
- Are provided with constant up‐dating services on safety, technical and legislative matters.
Lifts and Escalators are complex products, the design responsibilities and the level of regulatory control can involve a full replacement of a non‐compliant product.
